Why Are Good Eating Habits So Hard?

Tribe Talk

So something wonderful happened this weekend. 😁 I shared on my Instagram story that I was working on creating some new initiatives for the summer and I needed some feedback.

I put together a 90-second survey and the answers came pouring in! It was so wonderful to get immediate feedback and in fact, I'd love some more if you'd click the button below and share your insight.

An Ah-Ha

One of the biggest revelations that is already emerging is that women like you possess the view that your eating habits are broken.

I know that the villain of perfectionism can creep into all of us, causing us to feel bad about eating everything that tastes good.

The truth is that it's hard to have food habits that are realistic on your schedule while helping you look and feel your best.

But that is only half the story. In reality, most women can't move forward because they don't realize the psychological anchor(s) they are dragging behind them.

The 5 Reasons Why...

Here are some possible psychological factors that may contribute to why some women consistently make poor food choices:

  1. Emotional Eating: Do you turn to food for comfort, stress relief, or to cope with emotions such as sadness, anxiety, or boredom? This is an easy habit to form because it provides temporary feelings of comfort or pleasure.
  2. Habitual Behavior: These are choices that are triggered by cues in your environment. For example, if you develop a habit of driving through a fast-food restaurant on your way home from work every day, it can become a routine that is difficult to break.
  3. Cravings and Addictions: Certain foods, especially those high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, can be powerful and challenging to resist. If you have a compulsive desire to eat certain foods despite negative consequences you're experiencing addictive-like behaviors.
  4. Social and Environmental Influences: Your family, peers, local cultural norms, and social gatherings can influence your food habits in many settings. Who you surround yourself with affects your food habits daily.
  5. Stories and Stressors: Low self-esteem, lack of motivation, or poor body image, can affect your ongoing food choices. For instance, stress can trigger emotional eating, while low self-esteem or body image issues may lead to comfort eating or using food as a form of self-soothing.

Every woman's individual relationship with food is complex and there may be a combination of factors contributing to poor food choices. Do you identify with any of the common habits?

I had an eating disorder as a teenager and it wasn't until the doctors informed me that unless I gained weight I wouldn't be able to be a mom one day.

I hope that if you find yourself struggling to deal with any of these real and common challenges, you'll do some work in looking backward and inward to identify what has a hold of you. If you want to reply back with some of your story, I'd love to hear it!

Future Goodness There’s something tender about this season. ✨ I’ve been thinking a lot about future goodness (ie. hope) — and how hard it can be to believe in it when you weren’t raised to expect it. I grew up in a scarcity household. Rural Arkansas. Old cars. No air conditioning. No dishwasher.A huge garden we lived off of. Chickens we raised… and ate. 🐣 I remember hearing more than once: “Do you need that — or do you just want that?” 🤨 Dreaming ahead felt irresponsible. Planning for...
